Hot to train your dog to obey the "come" command

Be a patient trainer. To start the process you should commit yourself to several hours with your dog and a friend or spouse.

The first step is to find a treat that your dog really likes more than any other treat. It should also be one that the dog can take one chew of the jaw and swallow it immediately. If you dog has to chew on the treat for any considerable amount of time the treat will not work.

Step two is to find a suitable fenced area where you can work off lead with your dog.

Step three is to have your friend stand no more than 5 feet away from you. Both of you should have about a dozen treats to use for the exercise.

Step four is to lead the dog into the space between you and your friend and remove the leash. Pat yourself on one leg or the other and say come. If the dog does not respond to your request, let him or her smell the treat. Have your partner hold the dog's collar while you gently tease the dog with the treat smell. Pat yourself on the leg again and show the treat to the dog. Say come. the dog will want to get to the treat and will tug on the collar. At this time have your friend let the dog go. When the dog comes to you give the dog a treat and pet the dog and give some praise, like "Good Boy, or Girl". As soon as you are through with the praise take the dog's collar in your hand and turn the dog around toward your partner. Have you partner pat his or her leg and call the dog's name and say come. If the dog tugs on the collar let the dog go. If the dog does nothing, have your partner come closer and let the dog smell the treat when held about two feet from his nose. Once your partner has the dog's attention have your partner say the come command again and again until the dog responds by tugging on his or her collar. As soon as the dog tugs on the collar, let him or her go get the treat. Repeat the process until the dog responds every time.

Step five, put a little more distance between you and your partner every three or so times that the dog responds to the command. After you have accomplished the come command without fail from ten to twelve feet you can give the dog a rest for an hour or so and start the process over again with a fresh batch of treats. During this step you will introduce some psychology. This process is called the third rat never learns. Psychologists did an experiment with rats many years ago and had three healthy rats and a maze. They rang a bell and let the rat into the maze. When the rat got to the other end they fed him. The first rat was fed every time he ran the maze. He kept running the maze. The second rat was fed every time for many times and then not fed for four times. They could not get the second rat to run the maze again. The third rat was fed many times then was not fed once, followed by five runs with the reward at the end of the maze. Then they rang the bell twice without reward, followed by two rewards, followed by three runs with reward followed by six runs with rewards. Then the third rat was fed randomly following two, tree, four and five runs with or without food rewards. After the training was over the third rat ran the maze any time the bell was rung whether fed a reward or not. So that is what you have to do with the dog. One person calls the dog "come' and rewards the dog when it comes. The other person calls it and does not feed the reward but gives the dog praise for obeying the command. As soon as soon as you are through praising the dog for the behavior, have the other person call the dog and reward it. Then person #2 calls and rewards, then person #1 calls and does not reward and gives praise each time a reward is not given and so on. Once the dog thinks he or she is going to get the treat and becomes confused as to when he or she will be rewarded, then just rewarding occasionally but praising every time will turn the dog into the third rat, and it will come to the command every time.

When playing tug of war, and you teach a dog to leave, how can you calm him down?

Hes learnt leave, so now we have been playing tug of war which really excites him. When the games over and we put it away hes still very excited and wants to play tug of war with anything. Any tips on how to get him to know "games over" and to "chill out"

To me that is MY goal with playing tug of war with a puppy, to teach her that when I say that the game is over she must calm down.

Personally I do it like this, I play a little tug of war and when she is either just beginning to get excited or only a little bit excited, I take a deep breath, becomes calm in both body language and voice and stops the tug of war with saying "It's enough now".
I put the toy down or away, before I sit or lay down myself, if possible I make her stay nearby me and after that, I just wait until she gives me some signals on that she is beginning to calm down.
When I praise any signs on that she is calming down, I use a quiet, calm voice with just a happy tone in it, NOT any high pitched "OOOH LA LA LA...!" without just "goood".

To help teach a puppy that "It's enough now" = game over and calm down, I try to make it as easy for her to succeed as possible in the beginning, by trying to always stop BEFORE she gets too excited to be able to somewhat quickly calm down.

Eventually I increase the difficulty of the training, by allowing her to become more and more excited before I stop. My goal with this training is to help teach them to go from being all excited, to relaxed within minutes.

With some (not all) of my bitches, I've managed to train them so that I could play tug of war with them, get them really, really excited and when I say "It's enough now" + lay down on the ground, then within a minute they will voluntary lay down near me and almost fall asleep.
But with others of my bitches I am happy if they are able to go from being really, really excited to within one or two minutes, being able to voluntary decide to come and lay down near me (if I lay down) and at least have relaxed enough to calmly begin to wait on what should happen next.
(Some of them are now dead and some are alive, but I chose to write only in present, instead of both past and present.)
