Looking for older SUV good for outdoor excursions?
I need something with a good bit of cargo room, older (im only carrying liability on it), and is good in off-road situations and snow. I am paying $2500 Cash or best price I can get if less.
I was looking at some 98-00 Ford Explorers. They seem to be quite prolific which would make parts and replacements easy and many have just over 100k miles.
I need opinions on what I should go for here.
You want good in off-road situations? If you're not familiar with it, there's something called IFS (Independent Front Suspension) on most of the smaller SUV's starting in the 80's and going to present - most of the fullsize, up until the mid-90's, had solid front and rear axles (in my opinion and in the opinion of many, MUCH more durable and flexible than IFS).
That being said, with that kind of budget, I would look into a mid-90's Jeep Cherokee (XJ model - see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Cherokee_%28XJ%29 ) with low miles. It'll have solid front and rear axles (of course make sure you get a 4wd one), is inexpensive to modify due to the large aftermarket, and I know people that have driven these things to 400,000 miles without problems. You can probably get one in great shape for that price, and they're so common that most parts can be replaced for $5 with a trip to the junkyard. Not to mention, the simplicity of them makes it much less likely that parts will break and they're all around a rugged vehicle.
Now, say on that Explorer, your IFS driveshafts go out - you're looking at a few hundred dollars worth of stuff to replace, what they refer to as "front-end work" on most cars, that can run up into the thousands (trust me I know - I have an IFS Chevy S-10 Blazer). How often do you hear of people needing "back end work" on their car? That's one of the perks of those old Cherokees - the front is just like the back - a driveshaft connected to the axles that turns the wheels. Simple as can be.

They made them all the way up to 2001, with the same reliable technology, until they deemed that simpler was not better, so they scrapped simplicity for complication and expensive foreign parts.
