Be a Good Neighbor with a Good Dog Fence
Fencing can be expensive. You want to keep your pet in your yard but allow him the room to get the exercise he needs. A minimum of a ten foot wide run as long as your yard would provide an adequate exercise are for most dogs. You may need to change your fence as your requirements change. A puppy does not require a high fence and you need to prevent any dog from digging their way free from under a fence.
Fence Types
There are many fence types available for you to choose from. They differ in price, appearance and quality.
Masonry Walls - If price is not a concern the best fence is a masonry wall. Masonry walls provide a strong barrier and ensure privacy.
Picket fences are expensive but not as much as a masonry wall. Wood slats are nailed onto an upright frame.
Split rail fences allow for more of a view through them. Fabric must be placed between the rails to keep your dog in your yard.
Chain Link – Pipes posts are used to support heavy-gauge wire fabric and is the most common fence found. An expensive options but is more durable and long-lasting than most other fence types.
Snow Fence – a economical option composed of low-gage wire fabric available in various heights supported by brace or t-posts. Stretching the fabric at installation is required to obtain a strong enclosure.
Farm Fence – the cheapest fence to install made of loosely woven fabric, narrow-gauge wire does not offer a lot of strength.
Hidden Fence – also known as invisible fences where electric wires are placed in-ground and signals to the dogs collar when they are approaching the boundary.

My fearful dog bit neighbor who reached over fence to pet him?
I have 2 dogs, a 4 yr old male mutt who is very fearful, and a very friendly sweet 7 yr old female mutt. The neighbor's friend evidently reached thru the fence to pet our dogs and got bitten by the fearful male. Do we have any blame in this? Should we put up "Beware of Dog" signs? New renters will be moving in on the other side, and the neighbors whose friend was bitten say they will frequently have small children visiting. Tucker has never before bit, other than he nipped at a repairman's pant leg once after he came in the house, went out the back, and came back in. I figured he was just being protective, but was somewhat shocked, since Tucker usually just goes and hides.
your neighbor should never have even tried to touch your dog, especially through the fence(thats the dogs territory and will feel threatened), has he absolutely lost his mind!!! EVERYONE knows you dont do that!!!! Put up beware of dog signs so people know not to do that. I have two american bulldogs who are the most lovable dogs ever, they are sooooo sweet but we have beware of dog signs because you never know what they will do if someone comes around when your not there (having the sign does not mean you have an aggressive dog, dogs are territorial especially if your not home). if you want the dog to be friendly with someone then the dog needs to see you friendly with the person and affirm the dog that the person is OK and make sure you start petting the dog before the stranger does and the first few times make sure the person doesnt touch the dog without you petting him too at the same time. My dogs like to bark at new people untill they see us make contact with the person. but then they are ok with it
