How to Select the Perfect Dog Bed
The array of dog beds that you can see in your local pet supply store can be quite overwhelming. From solid sided ones, wicker baskets, cushions and even novelty shaped ones; it can be difficult to know which the best is. There are a few steps that you can follow however, to ensure that your dog is happy and comfortable in its bed; they spend a lot of time in their bed after all!
To start with it is important that you pick a dog bed that is the appropriate size for your dogs breed and size. To find the ideal size measure your dog lying down and then add 30cm to give them plenty of room.
Many shops stock beds known as dog mattresses or dog duvets. These are ideal for many dogs and have removable covers that are machine washable. They come in a wide range of colours so should fit in with any décor. If your dog is elderly then these can come with memory foam stuffing to support their joints and bones.
Smaller dogs like to burrow in and nest, so small round snuggle or donut shaped beds are the best. These are soft and warm, usually come in a range of sizes and more importantly can be thrown in the washing machine when they inevitably get dirty. These should be roughly the length of your dog from nose to base of their tail.
If your dog doesn't like to be sneaked up on, then try a bed with sides. The oval-shaped Alex Griffiths Cosipet Superbed for example comes in range of sizes and has a removable base with fur on one side and fabric on the other, allowing a cooler or warmer sleeping area. A wicker dog basket goes one step further and provides your dog with a more secure surround whilst plastic is more suitable if your dog likes to chew.

how can i stop my dog from tearing the sofa apart ?
we take him out for walks and everything but @ night time when were all upstairs he decides to go on the sofa which he doesent do in the day time and rips it up....HELP !!
okay, first, I need to know what breed of dog he/she is. many very socialized dogs will do things like that for attention. in fact, 99% of the destructive behavior of dogs can be attributed to a lack of attention, or confusion on his role in the pack. Outside that, here are some suggestions:
Take him to PetSmart and let him pick out a chewy toy. Rope bone, squeaker, whatever he likes (My dog is particularly fond of Barbequed pig's ears) when he feels lonely, or feels like tearing up the couch, he may simply start in on the rope bone or whatever.
discipline- you COULD do what people above have suggested and swat him with a newspaper when you catch him, but that requires you to catch him. Personally, I like to take the "Dog Whisperer" approach and identify the specific problem causing the behavior.
A better method of discipline would be to reinforce your role as the alpha of the pack. A dog is *NOT* your equal and they must always know that YOU are the alpha. that being said, the couch is for the higher humans to sit on and is NOT a chew toy for sparky. things you can do to reinforce your role as the pack leader are
1. do not EVER let your dog sleep with you in the bed, unless he absolutely knows that the bed is YOURS and you are allowing him, at your grace, to be there with him; however, that grace is subject to revocation at any time. (More effective to let him sleep at the foot of the bed.)
2. Dogs NEVER eat first. ALWAYS humans. This is how it works in a pack. Alphas always eat first, then, if the alphas allow it, the lower members of the pack may eat. You can reinforce this by , of course, not feeding him until after you've eaten, and you can even sit down by his doggie bowl, and enjoy your roast beef. If he gets curious and comes up to you, chase him off with a quick, snappy "GET!" (Get is the command I use to chase off my Dogs when they are somewhere they shouldn't be)
